Artist Bio

DJ Stenson resides in Torrington, Connecticut. She is an expressionist painter and mixed media collage artist who works in acrylics, oil and cold wax, and alcohol ink. She is also a jewelry designer who incorporates her artwork into unique pendants, earrings and bracelets. Her inspiration comes from the natural environment and literature. She is a member of the Northwest Arts Council, the Milford Arts Council. The Torrington Collective chose her as artist of the week in June 2020. In February 2020 she received Second Place in Painting from Art Life Culture's exhibit in Harwinton, Connecticut. She was the recipient of the Milford Arts Council People's Choice Award in July 2020. She is currently exhibiting artwork in local venues and in online exhibits. Her jewelry designs are available in her online store.

Artist Statement

I enjoy exploring the process of creating a painting. The vibrant color and texture of acrylics on paper suits my expressionist style. I often work intuitively applying paint with a pallet knife, brush or other tool. I blend and soften edges with a brush or rag or remove paint with medium or water to create negative space, depth or interest. I fluctuate between bold, gestural, impasto marks, and soft, blended areas, always with an attention to color. It is my intention to provide viewers with visceral spaces in which to get lost. Lately, I've been exploring the meditative quality of texture combined with a limited palette.

Some of my recent work has been in mixed media. I often use collage paper I have created, in combination with graphite and acrylic paint on paper. I am working directly on cradled birch panel or mounting them, afterward. These abstract landscapes and seascapes are full of texture and color, and intuitively created. I'm especially enjoying the multi-step process.

The jewelry I design is mostly created with alcohol ink. Whether combined with clay or on yupo paper, the unpredictable, vibrant flow of this beautiful medium is unlike anything else. I can choose just the right part of a painting to capture a floral-esque uniqueness in a mini work of art to wear, or form a tiny treasure out of clay. The abstract quality of these designs means no two pieces are exactly the same.

I have always had a profound connection with the sublime feeling nature inspires, and the cathartic effect of a walk in the forest or a day by the sea. As a painter and designer, my creativity is continually sparked by my deep respect for nature, and my travel experiences. As an avid reader, settings in literature that reflect a theme inspire my work continually, as well.

I hope my artwork will be reminiscent of a feeling, time or place, and observers will be intrigued as they find a connection.
