The Shades of Autumn Series was inspired by my love of the season. Environmental conservation often plays into my artwork, as well. I began each piece with some gestural drawing in graphite on textured Canson oil/acrylic paper. I had previously created most of my own collage papers with acrylic on various types and textures of paper. I repurposed cast-off paintings and sketchbook experimentations in this way, and in the process, materials were not wasted. I occasionally used tissue paper, too. Next, I chose some of these collage papers to work with, and found larger sections that worked as a focus. I layered acrylic paint from a limited palette, alternating with the hand-torn materials. The process was very intuitive. Once the paper stage of the piece was finished, I varnished it. Finally, I decided to make deckled (ragged) edges and mount each piece on cradled wood panel for a very finished, contemporary look.
